NEW PAST/OLD FUTURES: WAIARI

by WAIWHAI (Larsen Winiata Tito-Taylor)

A spontaneous sonic performance relating through pūoro + our waters beneath, both in terms of person and place; drawing from awareness from the three waves of past, present, and future.

New Past / Old Futures: WAIARI, by multi-dimensional musician WAIWHAI aka WhyFi (Larsen Winiata Tito-Taylor) conjures a sonic and visual love letter to the Horotiu stream (the waters that run beneath Myers Park). Larsen honours this body of water, inner tides, outer tides, Marama and the fluid and flowing parts of themselves and each other. A magical, immersive and metaphysical celebration of our wai in their varying incarnations.

This performance was first seeded in Basement’s 2021 Matariki residency between Larsen Tito-Taylor and Pipiana Hēmi.

Date: Saturday, 18 February
Time: 8.30PM
Location: Main Stage, Basement Theatre
Price: $18 - $39

ARTIST - NEW PAST/OLD FUTURES: WAIARI

WAIWHAI aka WhyFi. is the sonic moniker of Larsen Winiata Tito-Taylor (of Ngā Puhi/Ngāti Whātua/Tainui descent) – a multi-disciplinary artist from Tangiteroria, currently based in Tāmaki Makaurau. Over the course of ten days during a national lockdown in Aotearoa, Larsen created the album Keep your Distance by Virtual Shadow Ensemble – bringing together a who’s who of young New Zealand jazz, spoken word and electronic music artists. In his music, Larsen often creates with a ‘stream of consciousness’ approach, recording songs in the first take and resisting definition and boundaries. Today, he cites his primary influences as his friends – a circle of creators that inform and shape each other’s work - and ancestors of blood and spirit – whether through whānau and chiefs, or sonic ancestors inspiring soul expression such as Sun Ra.
